# VAT calculator: add VAT to a price, or take it out.

> Add VAT to a price or take it out of one that includes it, at the Saudi, UAE, Bahrain or Oman rate or any other, rounded to your currency. Free, no sign-up.

Dashing (dashing.krd) is a point-of-sale, inventory and double-entry accounting platform for retail shops in Iraq — Arabic-first, also in Kurdish (Sorani) and English — with a cashier that works offline and a built-in AI assistant called Dash.

Type a price and pick a rate to get the amount before VAT, the VAT and the total, rounded to your currency's decimals. Taking VAT out of a price that already includes it is not a percentage of that price: at 15%, the VAT inside 115 is 15, not 17.25.

## How to add VAT to a price

Multiply the price before VAT by the rate and add the result: at 15%, 200 becomes 200 + 30 = 230, which is the same as 200 × 1.15. At 5% you multiply by 1.05, at 10% by 1.10. The calculator rounds the VAT to the currency's smallest unit before adding it, so the three figures agree to the last fils or cent.

## How to take VAT out of a price that includes it

Divide the price including VAT by 1 plus the rate: 230 ÷ 1.15 = 200, so the VAT is 30. To get the VAT directly, multiply by the rate over 100 plus the rate: 230 × 15 ÷ 115 = 30. Taking 15% of 230 gives 34.50, which is wrong because the 15% was charged on 200, not on 230.

## Rounding and the currency's decimals

The Saudi riyal, the UAE dirham and the Egyptian pound have two decimals; the Bahraini dinar and the Omani rial have three, so VAT there is rounded to the fils or the baisa. Choosing a country sets both the rate and the decimals. Rounding each line can differ from rounding once on the total by a unit or two, so the list of several prices rounds each line, the way an invoice that shows VAT per line adds up.

## VAT in Dashing

In Dashing, VAT stays off until you turn it on. Then you set its tax codes and rates, each sale books its VAT apart from the revenue, and the VAT return comes from the books, not from a calculator.

## Common questions

### What is 15% VAT on 100?

15, so the total is 115. If the 100 already includes 15% VAT, the VAT inside it is 13.04 and the price before VAT is 86.96.

### How do I work out the price before VAT?

Divide the price including VAT by 1 plus the rate: at 15%, divide by 1.15; at 5%, by 1.05. So 1,150 including 15% VAT is 1,000 before it.

### Is there VAT in Iraq?

Iraq has no general VAT today, and no e-invoicing. The calculator is for prices in countries that charge it, such as Saudi Arabia at 15% and the UAE at 5%.

### Why three decimal places?

The Bahraini dinar is 1,000 fils and the Omani rial is 1,000 baisa, so their amounts, and the VAT on them, carry three decimals. Choosing Bahrain or Oman sets it.
