Barcode 940–949: which country is it from?

Barcodes that start with 940–949 were issued by GS1 New Zealand: the company registered its number there. That is where the brand is registered, not necessarily where the product was made; a 940–949 product can be manufactured in another country. Type or scan the full barcode below to see the product itself and check the number is valid.

Prefix 940

GS1 New Zealand

The organisation that registered the company number — not necessarily where the product was made. The check digit is valid.

Registered in New Zealand is not made in New Zealand

A company gets its barcode numbers from the GS1 office in the country it chooses, usually where its head office or brand is. The factory can be in another country, and the prefix does not change. For the country of manufacture, read the "made in" line on the pack.

Look up the product, not only the prefix

The first three digits only say who issued the number. The tool above looks the full number up in an open database and shows the product name, brand, size and photo, and checks the check digit.

Common questions

Does a 940–949 barcode mean the product is from New Zealand?

Not necessarily. 940–949 means the company got its numbers from GS1 New Zealand. Many companies register where their brand is and manufacture elsewhere; the country of manufacture is printed on the pack.

How do I know the number is valid?

The last digit of a barcode is a check digit computed from the twelve before it. Type the full number into the tool: if the check digit does not match, the barcode was misprinted or misread. A valid number proves the barcode is well-formed; it does not prove the product is genuine.

Why is the product not found?

The product name comes from an open database that people add products to. It has most well-known brands and misses many local products. If the product is not found, the number is not necessarily wrong; nobody has added it yet.
