Categories: creating them and categorising items in bulk

Adding a category from "Manage categories" or while creating a product, categorising several items at once, and where categories show at the till and in reports.

Verified against the product on 1 min read

A category orders the till grid and groups sales and stock reports; a handful of clear categories beats twenty.

Steps

  1. Open "Inventory", then "Categories" (or "Manage categories").
  2. Type a "New category name…" and press "Create". A category can also be created while adding a product from "New category".
  3. To categorise several items: select them in the inventory list, then from the action bar choose "Set category", the wanted "Category…", and "Apply".
  4. At the till, categories appear as grid filters; in the "Inventory report" you see "Value by category".

Notes

  • The same bulk bar offers "Adjust price by %" and "Minimum stock" for several items at once.
  • Accounting accounts do not follow categories; all sales sit in the sales account, and reports break them down by category.

What the system does not do

No nested categories (a category inside a category).

Common questions

Are categories per branch?
No, categories are shared across the shop; quantities are what differ between branches.
Deleting a category that has items?
The items stay, uncategorised, and are not deleted. Categorise them again with a bulk selection.
